STANDSTAY is a pretty new behavior for Nad as he only recently got STAND.

Here we continue with STANDSTAY and he holds position even with distractions of kibble being kicked across the floor to the other 2 dogs laying down and the phone ringing.

L3 TRICK (shaping BACK)

Yesterday at our Mentoring at MAH we worked on L3 TRICK shaping BACK.  I thought Nad was getting confused with all the c/t for any movement of the paw as he was previously shaped to back when I was trying to shape him to STAND.  We talked about trying it at home with just clicking for backing and see what happens.  So, we did.  I did start him with clicking for any movement to get him in the game.  AT one point he seems to get a little confused so I started c/t again for any movement other than forward.  Then he got the idea again.

Necessity is the mother of invention. I wanted to re-do this behavior so I could build my own muscle memory of it. Not having a coach to click for me, and not being able to see behind me...
I stood in front of my floor mirror in my bedroom. I had to put the clicker on a book on the floor because it wouldn't click on the carpet. Once Nad figured out we weren't doing Tuck or Swing, it was a great way to do it, although I must say it was a little slower... :)

We started out with a full Agenda and actually made it through almost all of it. Nad started out doing L1 with Cathy (L3 OTR), see video. He stayed focused through all 3 of the RP. I felt like I was losing his attention and that he was not in the game. When we were walking to the dog park he kept forging forward so it took us a long time to get there. Once inside, both Nad and Rooster did great recalls. When we walked back to the car he was much more in the game. I wasn't sure if he'd be up to going to the Forum. He'd had a very busy past 4 days and I thought he may have just been 'done'.

We stopped by my house to give Rooster a little New Home Etiquette. Nad stayed in the car in the driveway the whole time. Then we headed to the Forum. I was really pleased to see that Nad stayed focused and handled all the distractions well and we did a lot of Right Side work.

Tomorrow he will have a well deserved day off.

L2: CRATE-retrain a

Nad had recently developed some difficulty with staying in his crate so we backed up and are retraining. First we just shape him to go to the crate. Then for getting in the crate.


L2: CRATE-retrain b

This session we review going to and getting in. Then we want him to lie down in the crate.

When he is readily accomplishing those criteria, we drop back to going to the crate and getting in and we add the cue. Then we wait for the lying down. Gradually we increase the distance that Nad goes, by tossing the treat further away each time.

In this session, Lynn is standing, the crate door is closed briefly, then Nad must go to, enter and lie down before the door is closed. The click also keeps him in the crate after the door opens.

During this session we changed the condition of the crate itself, by removing the mat from inside. So we re-taught the behavior from the very beginning.....and we raised the value of the treat, too.

I am just on my way out the door and I wanted to put this up.

The guys had come yesterday and started the tree removal process. I had worked with Nad on not woofing and gave him lots of treats when they were here and sawing. I even had them give him a few. When they came back to finish today, I just left Nad out with them. Then I heard the saw and thought of another training opportunity. So, with the guys sawing the tree stump, I decided to see if Nad could do some L1 & L2 behaviors. I know I forgot some as it was 'off the cuff'. At the end is the trick, which is hard to see.

The day was for working on shaping and since I had just received a new collar and leash we did some work on LLW. With Beth's coaching and the new equipment, I could see a big difference.

Shaping to the skateboard Nad stayed In The Game and didn't seem to be bothered by the movement. The criteria was to get three feet on the board. Towards the end when Lorrie came in you can see how he was totally distracted and took a bit to get back into the game.

The LLW with the new collar and leash was like upgrading to a sports car. My criteria was for a vertical clasp. Like I said, that along with Beth's coaching helped me see exactly where the clasp was and needed to be.

I left with a renewed sense of LLW and some fun shaping ideas - thank you Beth!

This morning Nad alerted us that there was a strange dog by our gate. After I convinced this friendly guy to come hang in our kennel until the Animal Control could come out (as he had no tags on and the poor guy had a hurt paw), then it hit me...TRAINING OPPORTUNITY!!

I had worked Nad just a little before I thought of flipping it. What a perfect opportunity to bring out the frozen peanut butter. I added the cue "Lets Go" probably more for me than for Nad. So that when we get into situations, I will also have a verbal cue for me :)

I purposely started the camera before I placed the board on the ground so I could tape Nad from the beginning of what his behavior was upon first seeing the board for the session. 

My third click was way off - I clicked when he was leaving the board.  I then started walking the board with him to give him the idea that that is what I wanted, for him to go from one end to the other.  Then I sat down so I would not influence him at that point.  At 1:48 I paused to rethink my criteria (which was to have him walk from one end to the other as that's what he's done previously) and because I was slow, he started offering other shaped behaviors like backing up on the board.  Pretty cool...

This session is in our garage that is set up as an extra bedroom, workout room, storage room. Before we started this shaping session, we were sitting on the bed and I was shaping Nad to put his head down, then to touch my shoe. These were done while the serviceman was walking back and forth and had a large vacuum going outside the open garage door.

The vacuum wasn't running at this time, however, there is still quite a lot going on! At about 1:58 you can see Nad lose his train of thought and offer one of his other behaviors of resting his head on my shoe.

This video shows how much work we need on stand. As per Lynn's suggestion, we are going to start to retrain stand by capturing. Also, I tried to work through his woofing/barking I was working on his stand/duration. You can see (same as in the sit w/Duration video) that when he woofs, he almost always immediately looks at me). Lynn's suggestion here was that I only wait for 5 seconds of quiet before resuming our training.

We just got to the park and I had him get on the wall to watch. He had only walked through this side of the park one time a few weeks ago.



Part 2
Nadador starts to settle down. This video was taken directly after the first one, I just set the Flip down. There was quite a bit more video that got corrupt somehow. It shows him just hanging out, getting more and more relaxed. I found that there were many times I was clicking AS I was treating him in those videos. There was also a part that shows I had to block a little boy from running up to him.




6/30/10 - Part 1
I went back to the park to get some more video since the last one got corrupted. In part of the corrupted video was a piece that showed him doing a low growl and little woof where we did some good LAT work.
His tail is relaxed even though he is very alert.

He started offering to put his head down (one of our favorite shaping behaviors), so I went with it.

We went for a walk after hanging out on the wall. If you look closely between the garbage can and tree by where I turn around, there is a little white dog tied up there. Don't let that small, cute thing fool you. He may have been small, but he acted like Cujo! I used the high value cheese for a smooth pass by. Later, not flipped, we went up the stairs right next to him (again, this is the optimal time for cheese).

Nadador does a great job of staying focused on me. Even with a tempting spill of Starbucks on the floor he still manages to stay totally focused.

We did this after the L2:Come w/Holdback (I loaded them in the wrong order). When I am working on this at home, I will have much less distance to start. Patti suggested (as she does) starting in a small space so I don't go too far too fast. I will also start in a quiet environment. Eventually, one goal is to walk away from him instead of backing away. I also lost him in the game at .52 for about 5 seconds, however, he was able to get back into the game.

I was confused in the beginning that I was supposed to be the one grabbing his collar and then handing him off to the person holding him back.

Today we had the pleasure of having Beth/Gunner and Richard/America join Cathy, Karen and me at the session.

After the dogs got comfortable with being there and with the newcomers and doing our L1 behaviors, we did a lot of doodling, building up to passing each other.

We did our version of "Barrel Racing" using the dogs as barrels. We all took turns then Beth had the great idea of laying all the dogs down near each other in a row and having one dog at a time weave in and out of them. They all did amazing!

COME GAME
Nadador got to do the Come Game with Beth and Karen. They started doing the Come Game on the side we were doodling and there were lots of treats on the ground so he was quite distracted.
Once they moved to a 'treat free' area, he got focused and did great.





RALLY-LEFT ABOUT TURN
In preparation for Thursday's class, we worked on Rally-Left About Turn. Nadador is getting the idea here and I am also feeling more comfortable with it :)




We ended the session with our no clicker/treats walk. Nad and his bud Rooster had a nice quiet walk to finish the day.

Mentoring - Balboa Park-6/17/10

The idea was to work the dogs in a highly distracted area with dogs going by frequently to work on their reactivity.

We started with having the dogs lay on their mats next to our chairs close to the street and fairly far away from the dog park entrance. We were close to a sidewalk where some of the dogs would come and go to the park.

When Nadador would start woofing, we would walk around (Lynn's suggestion) and that would help him defocus a little. I noticed that wen one of the dogs would start barking, they would all pick it up. When we were walking by the bridge an Nad started barking, i tried just ignoring him by having him down and I turned my back on him. It got him more frustrated as he barked louder looking at me trying to get my attention. I feel a lot of this behavior is attention seeking.

When we left our clickers/treats back at our chairs and just walked out dogs to the gate of the dog park, it was much easier. We could just walk with the dogs, and not worry about when to c/t. Nad got to go into the park and play for a few minutes. He went right up to the gate, no woofing. A little anxious, so we waited to go in until he sat and lamed (as much as could be expected given the situation).

More exposure to dogs on leash
Using treats for more specific behaviors (not just rewarding randomly)

Criteria:
To keep him under threshold

Goal:
To get him used to other dogs around on leash and still stay in control of himself

This video is of the total session. I had not worked Nad on the board for quite some time. My criteria was 4 paws on the board. I started shaping him with 2 paw and he quickly went to 4. I thought he retained the information very well. I noticed that I missed a couple of clicks and then one time clicked inappropriately at 2:55 when he had just moved his rt back foot off the board. I really thought the "tail in the air" posture was adorable and had to control myself not to change midstream to shape that :)

In reviewing the video I can see I need to work on:

• Waiting until Nadador is finished chewing before I ask for another behavior :)
• Stop clicking when asking for linked behaviors until the link is complete

I was working on Duration with Nad on his back so I could put the herbal compress on his snakebite. Using Chutes and Ladders we got up to 12 seconds with him being perfectly still.

When he was offering the new behavior, I added the cue "be dead". After playing the video back I decided it was a very poor choice considering I was putting a cold compress on him for his snakebite. Maybe "Lay-Over", or "Flip". Any other suggestions?

I did help him. I didn't understand that they were supposed to get there all by themselves. Guess I was thinking of the Vet Visit we did at the clinic and thought it was ok to help him up on a few. Here are a breakdown of the items:

I made a very conscious effort to click when he was LLW AND looking away from me. When Nadador stopped to look at the playground, he was actually looking past it at the dogs running in the dog park. If I had clicked before he got too far away, I probably could have kept him from wondering away from me.

I use their name to get their attention and then use the cue. I like to wait until they don't flinch in anticipation when I say their name before I give them the Come cue.

Nadador had been reacting to the gardeners previously so this was a big step for him. When I had him Down is when he barked, so I took him away for a 60 sec Down.

This was immediately after the 'time out' period. When he would start to look at the person behind me, I would say 'Yes' and treat him. You can see he really gets that. I only put him in a very brief Down since that was uncomfortable for him previously.
